Ecommpay has integrated VietQR into its alternative payment method stack, providing e-commerce merchants direct access to Vietnam’s dominant digital payment infrastructure. For fintech professionals, this move highlights the critical role of local interoperable QR standards in capturing emerging market share, where traditional card schemes often take a backseat to bank-integrated mobile wallets.

What was announced

The integration allows Ecommpay’s global merchant partners to tap into a network connecting more than 2 million businesses with 50 million registered users across Vietnam. VietQR is supported by over 60 participating banks and facilitates hundreds of millions of transactions every month. This addition is particularly significant for cross-border commerce given that approximately 70% of shoppers in Vietnam prefer VietQR over other payment methods.

The system functions by allowing customers to pay directly from their existing Vietnamese banking apps or digital wallets. This removes the friction of manual card entry or the requirement to download third-party applications. When a transaction is initiated, payment details are automatically displayed in Vietnamese Dong (VND), allowing for secure review and approval by the consumer in their native currency.

For the merchant, the system offers operational flexibility and simplified treasury management. While the customer pays in VND, the merchant can choose to have funds settled in either EUR or USD. Transactions are typically settled by the next business day, and payment statuses are updated in real-time upon confirmation to help merchants process orders quickly. The interoperable nature of the VietQR model means merchants can display a single QR code that remains compatible with various banking apps and supported digital wallets, ensuring a consistent experience across desktop and mobile interfaces.

"Customers will often abandon a purchase if they cannot pay with their preferred local payment method, so we are committed to offering as many payment methods as possible. With VietQR now available for our merchant partners to add to their payment options, we are helping merchants reach more Vietnamese customers. VietQR provides our merchant partners with an easy way to expand into the Vietnamese market and its growing digital payments market, by offering local customers a smoother and more familiar checkout."

The companies involved

Ecommpay operates as an inclusive global payments platform and fintech ecosystem, positioning itself as a strategic partner for e-commerce merchants looking to scale internationally. The company provides a unified infrastructure that combines acquiring capabilities, payment gateway services, and a wide array of alternative payment methods (APMs). With a strong focus on technical innovation and merchant support, Ecommpay has built a reputation for helping businesses navigate the complexities of cross-border commerce, particularly in high-growth regions where local payment preferences vary significantly from Western standards.

VietQR is the unified brand for QR code-based payment and transfer services in Vietnam. It operates as an interoperable standard, allowing for seamless transactions across a vast network of financial institutions and digital service providers. By bridging the gap between more than 60 participating banks and millions of users, VietQR has become the cornerstone of Vietnam’s digital economy. Unlike fragmented wallet ecosystems, the VietQR framework ensures that a single merchant-side code can be scanned by any compatible banking app, making it the primary vehicle for the country's shift away from cash-heavy retail toward a mobile-first financial landscape.

What this means

The integration of VietQR underscores a broader industry shift where "local" is no longer a niche requirement but a prerequisite for global expansion. As Southeast Asia’s digital economy matures, the dominance of interoperable QR standards puts immense pressure on traditional card networks to lower fees or risk total displacement in emerging markets. For payment service providers, the challenge is no longer just about processing a transaction, but about managing the complexity of multi-currency settlement and real-time status updates across fragmented regulatory environments. This move highlights that the real competitive advantage in fintech now lies in the depth of a provider’s APM library rather than just its core processing speed.
