Visa, Kenya Airways, and Absa Bank Kenya have launched the Asante Global Card, marking the first time an airline, a bank, and a global payments network have collaborated on a co-branded credit card in Kenya. For fintech professionals, this represents a significant maturation of the Kenyan credit market toward high-yield, lifestyle-integrated financial products.

What was announced

The Asante Global Card is a premium travel-lifestyle credit card designed for professionals, frequent travellers, and premium banking customers. Available starting September 1st, the card operates under the "Your Life Rewarded" campaign and comes in two tiers: the Asante Global Signature and the Asante Global Platinum. The product is built to convert routine domestic and international spending into travel rewards through the Kenya Airways Asante Rewards programme.

Points are earned on every transaction, including daily expenses such as groceries, fuel, and dining, as well as international payments. New cardholders are incentivized with a welcome bonus of 10,000 Asante Rewards Points for the Signature tier and 5,000 points for the Platinum tier. Beyond the accrual of points, the card offers a suite of premium benefits including:

  • Complimentary airport lounge access and SkyPriority services worldwide.
  • Comprehensive travel and medical insurance coverage.
  • Additional baggage allowance on Kenya Airways flights.
  • Access to curated lifestyle experiences, such as golf tournaments and wine tastings.
  • Discounts at various local and international shopping and dining partners.

The card’s name is a hybrid of "Asante," the Swahili word for gratitude, and "Global," reflecting its acceptance across the worldwide Visa network. Prospective customers can apply for the card through a dedicated online portal at asante.kenya-airways.com. Once the application is approved and the card is activated, cardholders begin earning points on their everyday spending, which are redeemable across the Kenya Airways network and partner airlines.

"At Kenya Airways, we are constantly designing solutions that make travel more rewarding and accessible for our customers. This co-branded card is a natural extension of that commitment, allowing customers to earn travel rewards through their everyday spending,"

said Julius Thairu, Chief Commercial and Customer Officer, Kenya Airways.

The companies involved

Absa Bank Kenya is a major financial institution in the region, operating under the website absabank.co.ke. The bank focuses on consumer banking and has positioned this partnership as part of its broader mission to empower African consumers by connecting their personal aspirations with global opportunities. Visa is a global leader in digital payments, providing the technological backbone and international merchant network that allows the Asante Global Card to be used at millions of locations worldwide.

Kenya Airways, the national carrier, provides the primary reward ecosystem for the card. As an airline that has connected Africa to the rest of the world for decades, it is using this partnership to deepen customer loyalty by integrating its "Asante Rewards" points into the daily financial habits of its passengers. The collaboration leverages the specific strengths of each partner: Kenya Airways’ route network, Absa’s local banking infrastructure, and Visa’s global payment processing capabilities. This three-way integration is a first for the Kenyan market, where previous credit products have typically been limited to two-way partnerships between banks and payment networks.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has followed Visa’s expanding footprint across the CEMEA region and its strategic moves to enhance credit access and platform connectivity. Recently, the publication reported on how Visa, _able, and Onafriq Partner to Expand Visa Flex Credential Across CEMEA Markets, highlighting the company's focus on flexible credit solutions. Additionally, coverage of the REPAY Signs Reseller Agreement with Visa to Empower ISOs and ISVs with Direct Visa Platform Connect Access demonstrated Visa's efforts to streamline how independent software vendors interact with its global platform. These initiatives underscore a broader trend of Visa embedding its technology into diverse regional ecosystems to drive digital payment adoption.

What this means

This launch signals a shift in the East African fintech landscape, moving beyond the foundational mobile money services that have historically dominated the region toward sophisticated, credit-based lifestyle products. By tying air travel directly to grocery and fuel purchases, the partners are attempting to capture a larger share of the "wallet" of Kenya’s emerging affluent class. This move puts immediate pressure on other regional banks and airlines to develop similar integrated ecosystems or risk losing high-value customers to the Absa-Visa-Kenya Airways triumvirate. The success of this model will likely determine if the Kenyan market is ready for a broader wave of niche, high-reward credit products.
