Fawry and Al-Futtaim have launched a strategic partnership to integrate digital payments and loyalty rewards at Cairo Festival City Mall. For fintech professionals, this move signals a significant shift toward embedded finance in Egypt’s retail sector, merging a massive physical shopping destination with a nationwide digital payment infrastructure to streamline the consumer journey.

What was announced

The partnership establishes an integrated digital commerce ecosystem at Cairo Festival City Mall, a super-regional destination in Egypt that hosts more than 265 retail, dining, and entertainment brands. The initiative aims to connect payment processing, customer engagement, and loyalty rewards into a single journey for the mall’s 18.5 million annual visitors. Central to this collaboration is Blue, Al-Futtaim’s lifestyle and rewards platform. Shoppers will be able to earn and redeem Blue Points across participating tenants while accessing tailored offers and cross-category campaigns spanning retail, dining, and entertainment.

For merchants, the platform provides customer insights to help brands understand their audience and encourage repeat visits. Fawry is supporting the ecosystem with its established payments network, which currently serves 55.4 million active customers and processes over 1.057 billion transactions annually. The infrastructure includes 364.6 thousand POS acceptance points across Egypt, generating EGP 5.22 billion in total revenues. A key feature of the new program is the introduction of a flexible payment proposition. This will begin with a “Pay in 4” offering, expected to be available at selected participating merchants with zero customer fees. This phased rollout is designed to simplify payment operations for tenants while giving customers greater choice and convenience at the point of sale. The partnership marks the first phase of a broader roadmap, with the companies expecting to expand the range of onboarded tenants and payment options as the programme matures.

"As Egypt’s commerce landscape continues to evolve, the future lies in creating connected ecosystems where technology works seamlessly across every stage of the customer journey. Our partnership with Al-Futtaim reflects this direction, bringing Fawry’s payments capabilities together with Blue’s lifestyle ecosystem to create a more integrated experience for customers and merchants at Cairo Festival City Mall. Beyond enabling more convenient payments, we see this collaboration as an opportunity to help merchants better engage with their customers, unlock new opportunities for growth, and participate in the continued digital transformation of Egypt’s retail sector."

The companies involved

Fawry is a dominant force in the Egyptian fintech landscape, operating as a primary provider of digital payments and financial services. The company maintains a massive nationwide presence, supported by a payments network that reaches tens of millions of active users. Fawry’s business model spans across various sectors, including retail, healthcare, and business management, often integrating its POS technology directly into existing merchant systems. Al-Futtaim is one of the most diversified privately held regional businesses in the Middle East. Based in Dubai, the group operates across several sectors including automotive, financial services, real estate, and retail. In Egypt, Al-Futtaim is the developer and owner of Cairo Festival City Mall, a cornerstone of its regional real estate portfolio. The mall serves as a major hub for international and local brands, providing a high-traffic environment for the deployment of new retail technologies. Al-Futtaim Blue acts as the group’s dedicated lifestyle and rewards arm, focusing on deepening customer loyalty through data-driven engagement and integrated digital experiences across its various commercial properties and retail holdings.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has extensively tracked Fawry’s expansion into various vertical markets through strategic technical integrations. Recently, the publication covered how Fawry and DMS Partner to Automate Healthcare Payment Integration in Egypt, focusing on streamlining medical billing. The company has also been active in the software-led payments space, as seen when Fawry and CDS Launch Direct SoftPOS Integration for Odoo Business Management. Additionally, FF News reported on efforts to modernize the retail experience when Fawry and Crystal Mind Partner to Revolutionize POS Digital Payments in Egypt. These moves highlight a consistent strategy of embedding Fawry’s financial infrastructure into diverse business ecosystems to drive digital adoption across the Egyptian economy.

What this means

This partnership represents a significant escalation in the battle for Egypt’s digital wallet. By embedding "Pay in 4" and loyalty rewards directly into the physical mall experience, Fawry and Al-Futtaim are challenging traditional banks and standalone BNPL providers who lack this level of merchant-level integration. The move puts pressure on other regional mall operators to digitize their loyalty programs or risk losing footfall to more frictionless destinations. However, the success of this ecosystem hinges on tenant adoption; if a critical mass of the 265 brands does not fully integrate the Blue platform, the promised seamless journey could become fragmented, leaving the sector with more questions about the scalability of closed-loop retail ecosystems.
