Press Release: DBS PayLah! Expands to Taiwan: 3 Million Users Gain Seamless QR Payment Access | Featured Image by FF News

DBS has enabled its PayLah! app users to make QR payments at over 250,000 merchants across Taiwan, marking the first time a Singaporean bank has integrated with the TWQR network. For fintech professionals, this represents a significant deepening of cross-border retail payment interoperability between major Asian economies, reducing reliance on cash and traditional card rails.

What was announced

DBS PayLah! users, currently numbering over three million, can now scan to pay at approximately two-thirds of the TWQR (Taiwan QR Code) merchant network. This includes a wide range of vendors from local eateries and night markets to major retailers in popular tourist spots. The integration allows users to pay via the PayLah! app by scanning codes from participating providers such as Taiwan Pay, iPass Money, Easy Wallet, and PXPay Plus. During the transaction process, the app displays the amount in Taiwan Dollars (TWD), the real-time exchange rate, and the final cost in Singapore Dollars (SGD) before the user confirms payment.

This launch executes a cross-border initiative first established in April 2026 between Singapore’s NETS and Taiwan’s Financial Information Service Co. (FISC). Looking ahead, the service is scheduled to expand to the full TWQR network, including JKO Pay, in 2027. Additionally, DBS will introduce a merchant-scan-customer payment option next year, allowing major retailers in Taiwan to scan PayLah! user QR codes. By 2027, the connectivity will become reciprocal, allowing DBS customers in Taiwan to use their digibank app to scan SGQR codes at participating merchants in Singapore.

"Across Asia, people have different ways of paying for everyday purchases, shaped by the local payment systems they use. At DBS, we're working with partners to bring more of these systems within reach of our customers, so that paying overseas feels as familiar and straightforward as it does at home. Take-up of our cross-border QR payment services remain strong, with transaction volumes growing 2.5 times year-on-year and the number of unique users doubling. Our collaboration with Taiwan's TWQR builds on this momentum, bringing consumers and merchants across Asia closer together and making it easier for customers to pay wherever their journeys take them."

The companies involved

DBS is a leading financial services group in Asia, headquartered in Singapore. It operates across 19 markets and has a significant presence in Southeast Asia, Greater China, and South Asia. The bank is the parent company of NETS (Network for Electronic Transfers), Singapore's national payment network, which was instrumental in establishing the linkage with Taiwan. In this specific arrangement, DBS Bank Taiwan serves as the settlement agent bank, facilitating the financial clearing of cross-border transactions.

The Taiwanese partner in this initiative is the Financial Information Service Co. (FISC), the entity responsible for developing and managing the TWQR network. FISC operates as the primary interbank clearing and settlement system in Taiwan, aiming to unify various QR payment standards under a single interoperable mark. This collaboration leverages the existing travel ties between the two regions, following data that placed Singapore among Taiwan’s top ten visitor source markets in 2025. This adds to DBS's existing cross-border QR payment capabilities across Indonesia’s QRIS, Malaysia’s DuitNow, Thailand’s PromptPay and UnionPay globally.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely tracked the digital evolution of DBS as it expands its footprint across Asia. Recently, the publication reported on how DBS and Avaloq Target SGD 1 Trillion Wealth Goal with Expanded Asia Partnership, highlighting the bank's aggressive growth strategy. In the realm of infrastructure, we covered how Singapore’s Big Three Banks Execute First Live Tokenised Deposit Transactions via Swift, a move that parallels this retail payment expansion in its technical complexity. Furthermore, the bank’s focus on travel-centric products was evidenced when DBS Launches Chromo and TravelLah! Cards to Revolutionise Gen Z Rewards and Travel Hacking. The bank also recently demonstrated its cross-border capabilities at the institutional level, as DBS and Citi Complete First Weekend USD Cross-Border Payment via Swift Digital Ledger.

What this means

This announcement signals a shift in the competitive landscape for travel payments, moving beyond the "walled gardens" of traditional credit card networks. By integrating directly with a national QR standard like TWQR, DBS is bypassing the high interchange fees associated with international card transactions, offering a more cost-effective alternative for both merchants and consumers. This puts immediate pressure on regional fintechs and neobanks that rely on card-based travel wallets. The success of this rollout raises a critical question for the sector: will national payment switches across Asia eventually converge into a single, seamless retail rail that renders physical travel cards obsolete?
