American Express has secured a significant expansion of its UK merchant network through a new acceptance agreement with Home Bargains. This partnership allows Amex cardmembers to use their cards across the discount retailer’s 650-plus stores and online, marking a strategic win for the card network as it targets high-volume, value-focused retail sectors.

What was announced

The agreement brings American Express acceptance to one of the UK’s largest privately-owned companies. Home Bargains, which operates over 650 stores nationwide and employs more than 29,000 people, will now accept Amex payments both in-store and through its digital platforms. The discount chain specialises in high-street brands across categories including household goods, health and beauty, toys, and food.

To support the rollout, the companies will launch a marketing campaign featuring targeted email communications to Amex cardmembers, alongside digital and social media activity. This move is part of a broader trend for American Express in the UK market; the company reports that its merchant coverage has tripled since 2021. Globally, the network reached 170 million merchant locations by the end of 2025.

By joining the network, Home Bargains follows a trajectory seen across the UK retail landscape, where every major supermarket chain and a growing number of high-street retailers now accept the card. The partnership aims to provide cardmembers with more locations to spend, while offering the retailer access to a demographic that typically exhibits higher spending patterns than users of other credit card networks.

"We’re delighted to now accept American Express both in our stores and online, giving customers even more choice and convenience when shopping with Home Bargains. We know many of our customers value the flexibility that American Express provides, and we’re pleased to make it easier for them to pay in the way that suits them best while continuing to offer the top brands at bottom prices they’re used to."

The companies involved

American Express is a global payments and travel company that provides customers with access to products, insights, and experiences. In the UK market, the firm has focused heavily on expanding its merchant footprint beyond its traditional premium and travel-focused roots. It maintains a significant presence in the fintech ecosystem, often partnering with infrastructure providers to broaden its reach and integrate its network into modern point-of-sale systems.

Home Bargains is a major player in the UK discount retail sector. Founded in 1976 in Liverpool, the company has remained privately owned while scaling into a national powerhouse. It has built its market position by offering branded goods at discount prices, a strategy that has seen it become one of the fastest-growing retailers in the country. Unlike many of its competitors on the high street that have faced consolidation or restructuring, Home Bargains has maintained a steady physical expansion, now operating as a top-tier employer with a workforce exceeding 29,000 colleagues. Its move to accept American Express signals an evolution in its payment strategy to accommodate a wider variety of consumer financial preferences.

What this means

This partnership illustrates the eroding boundary between "premium" payment networks and discount retail. Historically, Amex was often excluded from low-margin discount environments due to perceived higher merchant fees. However, as the network has tripled its UK footprint since 2021, it is clear that the trade-off—sacrificing a small margin for access to Amex’s high-spending demographic—is becoming more attractive to volume-driven retailers. This puts pressure on traditional mid-market retailers who no longer hold the exclusive "Amex-friendly" status. The move also raises questions about whether other deep-discount competitors will be forced to follow suit to maintain parity in customer convenience as consumer expectations for payment flexibility continue to rise.
