Orange Becomes First French Merchant to Launch Wero Payment Integration
By Lauren Towner · 4 September 2026

Orange has integrated the Wero payment solution for its Sosh brand, marking the first time a French merchant has utilized the European Payments Initiative’s (EPI) system for subscription billing. This move signals a significant expansion for Wero from peer-to-peer transfers into the commercial recurring payment space, challenging established international card schemes within the European market.
What was announced
Orange is introducing Wero as a payment option for Sosh customers, providing a streamlined method to settle subscription invoices directly through existing banking applications. While Wero was originally conceived by the European Payments Initiative (EPI) to facilitate instant payments between individuals, this implementation represents its debut in the French subscription market. The solution is currently available to Sosh subscribers who are customers of BNP Paribas, with a broader rollout to additional French banking institutions scheduled for the second half of 2026.
The technical infrastructure for this integration is supported by AXEPTA BNP Paribas, which handles the technical acceptance of the payments. Wero’s scale is already substantial; the platform has been adopted by approximately 40 million users in France and more than 58 million users across the wider European landscape. For Sosh users, the process involves selecting Wero at the point of payment within their banking app and confirming the transaction, removing the need for manual entry of card details or separate direct debit mandates. This partnership between Orange and EPI aims to position the telecom provider as a leader in digital service adoption while supporting the growth of a homegrown European payment ecosystem.
"Our ambition is to make Orange the benchmark operator for everyday digital services, placing simplicity, security and customer satisfaction at the heart of every journey. With Wero, we are opening up a new payment method for subscription bills and contributing to the emergence of a European solution in a strategic field. This first for France illustrates our determination to innovate to enhance customer satisfaction."

The companies involved
Orange is a global telecommunications heavyweight, operating under its primary brand and the digital-only Sosh label in France. The company has a long-standing history of integrating financial services into its digital ecosystem. BNP Paribas, one of the largest banking groups in the world, provides the initial banking rail for this Wero rollout. The bank operates AXEPTA BNP Paribas, a specialized payment acceptance arm that facilitates secure transaction processing for merchants.
The European Payments Initiative, which developed Wero, is a consortium of European banks and payment service providers aiming to create a unified pan-European payment system. By leveraging account-to-account (A2A) technology, the initiative seeks to reduce reliance on non-European payment networks. Martina Weimert at EPI Company noted that the partnership with Orange represents a milestone in the launch of online payments in France. This collaboration brings together a major telecommunications provider and a top-tier European bank to validate Wero’s utility beyond simple peer-to-peer transfers, embedding it into the monthly billing cycles of millions of consumers.

What this means
The expansion of Wero into subscription billing is a direct challenge to the dominance of Visa and Mastercard in the European recurring payment market. For years, the industry has questioned whether a bank-led initiative could successfully transition from a P2P tool to a genuine merchant payment method. By securing a major merchant like Orange, EPI proves that Wero can handle the complexities of subscription logic. This puts immediate pressure on traditional card acquirers to justify their fees as account-to-account payments offer a potentially more cost-effective alternative. The primary question remaining is whether consumer habit—long tied to card rewards and protections—will shift quickly enough to give Wero the volume it needs to be truly competitive.
