Vipps MobilePay Unites 13 Million Nordic Users Under Single Vipps Brand
By Lauren Towner · 7 October 2026

Vipps MobilePay is retiring the MobilePay brand in Denmark, Finland, and Greenland, unifying its 13 million users under the Vipps name starting in January. For fintech professionals, this consolidation represents a strategic move to achieve the scale necessary to compete with global tech giants by creating a single, dominant cross-border payment identity across the Nordic region.
What was announced
The transition marks the final phase of the 2022 merger between Norway’s Vipps and Denmark’s MobilePay. While the companies have already integrated their technology into a single shared app, they have continued to operate under different names in different markets. This will change on 12 January, when the MobilePay name is officially retired in favor of Vipps.
The rollout follows a phased approach. Beginning 6 October, the MobilePay app icon in Denmark and Finland will be updated to feature the "Vipps smile," though the MobilePay name will remain visible until the final switch in January. Despite the name change, the app will maintain its regional visual identity; it will keep its familiar blue color in Denmark and Finland, while remaining orange in Norway and Sweden.
The scale of this unification is substantial. MobilePay currently serves 4.8 million users in Denmark and 3 million in Finland. By bringing these together with the existing Vipps user base, the company will manage a network of nearly 13 million users. The company confirmed that users will not need to take any action during the transition, as all existing features and functionality within the app will remain unchanged. This move aims to simplify the user experience for travelers paying in major Nordic hubs like Copenhagen, Helsinki, Stockholm, and Oslo, ensuring they look for a single brand regardless of the country they are in.
"Vipps and MobilePay has become much stronger together. We compete with the world's biggest technology companies, with enormous resources behind them. Scale matters. If we want to build one strong Nordic player, it makes sense to bring everything together under one name,"
Rune Garborg, CEO of Vipps MobilePay.
The companies involved
Vipps MobilePay is the entity formed by the 2022 merger of two of the most successful mobile payment platforms in Northern Europe. Vipps, originally the dominant player in the Norwegian market, and MobilePay A/S, which has been a staple of daily life in Denmark since its launch in 2013, joined forces to create a regional powerhouse. In Denmark, MobilePay’s market penetration is so deep that the brand name has transitioned into a common verb in the local language.
The group operates across Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Sweden. Before the merger, MobilePay was a prominent Danish fintech success story, while Vipps established itself as the primary digital wallet for Norway. By operating as a single company with a shared technological infrastructure, Vipps MobilePay aims to leverage its combined resources to innovate faster than it could as separate entities. The group now positions itself as a unified Nordic alternative to global payment solutions, focusing on peer-to-peer transfers and merchant payments across the region's borders.
What FF News has reported before
FF News has closely followed the evolution of the Nordic payment landscape and the growth of Vipps MobilePay. We previously reported on how Vipps MobilePay selects Tink to power Pay by Bank for P2P in Finland, a move that strengthened its technical capabilities in the Finnish market. The company’s efforts to expand its utility were also highlighted when Vipps and Klarna Partner to Enable Contactless Payments for Millions Across the Nordics, showcasing its strategy of collaboration with other major fintech players. Additionally, the broader context of digital wallet adoption in the region was covered in Visa Helps Launch New Digital Wallets in Europe, which detailed the shifting consumer preferences toward integrated mobile payment solutions.
What this means
This rebranding is a calculated risk that prioritizes regional scale over local brand equity. While "MobilePay" carries immense cultural weight in Denmark, maintaining fragmented brands is an expensive luxury in a market increasingly squeezed by Apple Pay and Google Pay. By consolidating, Vipps is betting that a unified "Nordic" identity will be more resilient against Silicon Valley’s encroachment than individual national champions. The move puts pressure on other European payment schemes to consider whether local brand loyalty is enough to survive without cross-border interoperability. The industry will now be watching to see if Danish users accept the loss of a household name in exchange for a broader regional ecosystem.
