Tencent signs Mastercard MoU on agentic payments, days after a similar Visa deal
By Ali Paterson · 3 November 2026
In brief: TenPay Global and Mastercard signed an MoU at Hong Kong FinTech Week covering QR acceptance for visitors to mainland China, remittances into Weixin via Mastercard Move, and agentic commerce via Agent Pay. It follows Tencent's 29 October MoU with Visa. No launch dates were given.

TenPay Global, Tencent's cross-border payment platform, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Mastercard covering cross-border payment interoperability and agentic payments. The deal was announced at Hong Kong FinTech Week 2026, four days after Tencent signed a similar MoU with Visa, which means the Weixin/WeChat ecosystem is now working with both of the big card networks on AI-driven commerce.
What the MoU covers
The proposed collaboration has three strands:
- QR acceptance for visitors to the Chinese mainland. International visitors would be able to pay at QR-enabled merchants using the digital wallets and issuer apps they already use. The work builds on Mastercard's payment facilitation initiatives in the mainland and its Mastercard Wallet Pay portfolio.
- Remittances into Weixin. The two firms plan to deepen their existing remittance relationship through Mastercard Move, so more overseas senders can transfer money into the Weixin ecosystem.
- AI-enabled commerce. They will explore Mastercard Agent Pay, Mastercard Agent Connect and Virtual C-Suite as ways to scale agent-initiated commerce for consumers and merchants.
The companies will also look at wallet innovation, cross-border infrastructure, security and fraud prevention, including how Mastercard's value-added services could support future products inside the wider Weixin/WeChat ecosystem.
Why now
Inbound spending in China is rising fast. Between January and August 2026, transactions made with international digital wallets through Weixin Pay in the Chinese mainland grew 81.8% by number and 80.6% by value year on year. Mastercard's own data shows inbound spending up 51.3% in the 12 months to June 2026.
Both networks on board
On 29 October, Tencent and Visa signed an MoU spanning cross-border payments, agentic commerce, enterprise AI and support for businesses expanding overseas. That deal includes exploring how Visa Intelligent Commerce could support purchases made with help from AI agents, and extending remittances into Weixin Pay through Visa Direct.
TenPay Global also used Hong Kong FinTech Week to sign a remittance MoU with UnionPay International, the first partnership between the two in that space. TenPay Global's remittance platform already works with more than 60 international banks and remittance firms and supports transfers to China from over 150 countries and regions.
None of the agreements sets a launch date for agentic payments.
