PhotonPay has closed a $40 million Series C funding round to scale its stablecoin-centric "Financial Operating System." Led by Blockchain Capital, the investment highlights a shift toward "agentic commerce," where AI-driven systems coordinate multi-asset workflows across global rails. For fintech professionals, it marks the maturing intersection of digital assets and traditional clearing infrastructure.

What was announced

PhotonPay’s $40 million round included participation from new investor SBI Group, alongside follow-on investments from existing backers IDG Capital, GL Ventures, and Lightspeed Faction. Blacksheep Technology acted as the exclusive financial advisor for the transaction. The new capital is designated to support the expansion of PhotonPay’s Financial Operating System (Financial OS), specifically focusing on multi-asset wallet capabilities, global card issuing, and the strengthening of local clearing infrastructure in key markets.

As of August 2026, the company reported an annualized transaction volume of $65 billion. PhotonPay currently holds 34 payment and financial licenses and regulatory authorizations across the Americas, Europe, and Asia, serving over 200,000 business customers in more than 200 countries and territories. Its infrastructure allows businesses to open local collection accounts in 17 markets and receive funds in over 60 currencies. On the payout side, the network supports more than 100 payment routes, including 74 major local e-wallets, with 68% of transactions arriving in real time.

A significant portion of the announcement centered on "agentic commerce." In May 2026, PhotonPay and Mastercard completed a live demonstration using a tokenized card to validate AI-initiated transactions. This development aims to create a programmable financial execution layer where AI agents can manage funds within defined boundaries. The company’s card issuing business has seen rapid growth, with 4.4 million virtual and physical cards issued over the last 12 months, representing a 275% year-on-year increase.

The companies involved

PhotonPay is a financial technology firm that bridges digital asset liquidity with traditional fiat rails. Its architecture is built on an API-first approach, integrating foreign exchange, local clearing, and global card issuing. The company maintains institutional partnerships with J.P. Morgan, Standard Chartered, and DBS, and connects directly to domestic payment systems such as Brazil’s Pix and Mexico’s SPEI.

Lead investor Blockchain Capital is a venture capital firm focused on the blockchain ecosystem. Joining the round is SBI Group, a major Japanese financial services conglomerate that has been a prolific investor in the fintech sector. SBI Group operates across various segments including securities, banking, and digital assets, frequently engaging in the market through subsidiaries like SBI Ven Capital. The round also saw continued support from IDG Capital, a global investment firm, and Lightspeed Faction, which focuses on blockchain-related ventures. Mastercard, which collaborated with PhotonPay on its recent AI payment demonstration, remains a dominant force in global payments, increasingly focusing on the security and integration of stablecoins into traditional commerce networks.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has extensively covered the intersection of traditional payment networks and emerging digital asset technologies. Mastercard has been a primary driver in this space, recently introducing Stablecoin Security to Combat Fraud in Digital Asset Payments to provide risk intelligence for the sector. The network has also been active in expanding digital infrastructure in complex regions, such as the launch of a Gateway in Syria to reconnect the nation to global payments.

Furthermore, Mastercard’s focus on small-to-medium enterprises was highlighted by its partnership with Olist to provide AI-Powered ERP Solutions in Brazil. The trend toward programmable, niche card products was also seen in Mastercard's collaboration with Beast Industries to Launch Creator Co-Brand Cards, mirroring the rapid growth in card issuance reported by PhotonPay.

What this means

This funding round signals that the "crypto vs. fiat" narrative is being replaced by a hybrid reality. PhotonPay’s $65 billion volume suggests that for enterprise users, the specific rail matters less than the speed of settlement and the ability to program spend. The industry is pivoting toward a "headless" financial model where AI agents, rather than human operators, coordinate treasury functions. This shift puts traditional banks under pressure to provide more than just a ledger; they must now provide programmable infrastructure. However, the reliance on 34 different licenses proves that while software is fast, regulatory compliance remains a slow, localized, and capital-intensive barrier to entry.
