CellPoint Secures $34M Investment to Launch Zenith AI Platform for Airline and Hospitality Payments
By Lauren Towner · 22 September 2026

CellPoint has secured a US$34 million investment from Toscafund to launch Zenith, an AI-driven payment decisioning platform specifically for the airline and hospitality sectors. This capital injection, paired with a complete leadership overhaul, signals a strategic pivot toward using machine learning to optimize thin-margin industries where payment failures and processing costs directly impact corporate resilience.
What was announced
The centerpiece of the announcement is the launch of Zenith, an artificial intelligence decisioning layer designed to optimize payment flows for high-volume travel and hospitality businesses. Unlike traditional payment gateways, Zenith functions as an intelligent overlay that can sit atop any existing payment orchestrator—whether it is CellPoint’s proprietary technology or a third-party solution. This architecture allows airlines and hotels to implement AI-driven routing and decisioning without the need to rip and replace their current payment infrastructure.
The platform is engineered to turn raw payment data into automated commercial decisions, specifically aimed at raising transaction approval rates and recovering revenue that is often lost to technical friction or inefficient routing. For Chief Financial Officers, the system provides a real-time view of the payment stack’s performance, highlighting the direct impact of payment efficiency on the profit and loss statement.
The US$34 million investment, managed by Toscafund’s private equity affiliate Penta Capital, will fund a significant expansion of the company’s global footprint. CellPoint is opening 50 new roles across product development, data science, AI engineering, sales, and partnerships. these hires will be distributed across the Americas, Europe, and Asia to support the global nature of the airline and hospitality markets. To lead this technical roadmap, Patrick Uckermark has been appointed as Chief Product and Technology Officer, where he will oversee the integration of data and AI into the core product suite.
"Payments are one of the largest controllable cost and revenue lines in an airline or hotel P&L, and one of the least well managed. Our job is to change that. Zenith uses AI to raise approval rates, cut cost of payments, recover lost revenue and give CFOs a live view of what their payment stack is actually doing. The $34m investment lets us build it at pace."
Kevin Murphy, Group CEO at CellPoint.
The companies involved
CellPoint operates as a specialized payments technology provider with a deep focus on the travel and hospitality verticals. The company’s market position is built on handling the complex, multi-currency, and high-value transactions inherent to global airline operations. By focusing on these specific sectors, the company aims to address the unique challenges of "payment orchestration" in environments where margins are notoriously thin and reliability is a prerequisite for operational stability.
The investment comes from Toscafund, a multi-asset investment manager, and was executed through its private equity affiliate, Penta Capital. Penta Capital is known for taking active roles in its portfolio companies, a strategy reflected here by the appointment of a new leadership team. Kevin Murphy has been installed as Group CEO, while Michael Kelly takes on the role of Chairman. This new executive core, supported by Steven Scott, Managing Partner at Penta Capital, has been given a specific mandate to transform the company into an AI-led platform. The involvement of Penta Capital suggests a shift toward a more disciplined, financial-impact-driven approach to fintech service delivery in the travel sector.
What this means
This move highlights a significant shift in the payment orchestration market: the transition from simple connectivity to "intelligent decisioning." For years, the value proposition of fintechs in the travel space was simply connecting various payment methods. However, as orchestration becomes commoditized, the real value has shifted to the data layer. By positioning Zenith as an AI overlay that works with third-party stacks, CellPoint is acknowledging that large airlines are unlikely to undergo total infrastructure overhauls. Instead, the industry is moving toward a "modular" approach where AI tools are plugged into legacy systems to extract marginal gains. This puts pressure on traditional payment processors who lack the specialized data sets required to optimize the specific nuances of airline and hotel booking flows.
