MPay, Macao’s leading e-wallet, has become one of the first partners to adopt Ant International’s Agentic Mobile Protocol (AMP). This integration allows AI agents to execute financial transactions directly through the MPay app, signaling a fundamental shift for fintech professionals as artificial intelligence moves from providing recommendations to autonomously managing the consumer payment journey.

What was announced

The adoption of the Agentic Mobile Protocol (AMP) enables MPay to bridge the gap between AI-driven discovery and final settlement. Under this framework, authorized AI agents can invoke MPay’s payment capabilities to complete purchases on behalf of the user. This transition aims to streamline the user experience by removing the need to manually switch between research tools, merchant pages, and payment applications. The protocol was recently rolled out globally by Ant International at the 2026 Inclusion Conference on the Bund.

A primary example of this functionality is YOYO, an AI agent designed for cross-border travel and consumer services. A user can instruct the agent to find and book a hotel for a specific event, such as the 2026 Inclusion Conference on the Bund in Shanghai. The agent performs the search and price comparison, and upon user confirmation and authorization, triggers MPay on the user's device to finalize the transaction. Security is managed through the Know-Your-Agent (KYA) framework and AgentSafePay, which provide identity verification for AI entities and fund protection.

Users retain control by setting the scope of agent authorization, defining specific spending limits, and establishing conditions for each transaction. They can review or revoke these permissions at any time. MPay, which already supports cross-border payments in approximately 60 countries and regions, previously launched its AI Payment Assistant in April to help local merchants and developers integrate payment capabilities more efficiently. This latest move integrates Macao’s local merchant services into a broader global ecosystem of intelligent lifestyle services.

"MPay is honored to be among the first digital wallets around the world to support Ant International’s AMP. AI agents are changing how users access services and complete transactions, and payments are a key link in bringing AI into real-world business environments. As an international city of tourism, Macao has a unique advantage in its ability to unite local life, cross-border consumption, and global services. Macau Pass will continue to embrace pioneering technologies and steer the deep integration of AI, payments, and local businesses to bring more innovative services to Macao first, helping Macao’s digital lifestyle, smart city development, and commercial services connect with the broader international ecosystem."

The companies involved

MPay is the dominant e-wallet in Macao, serving as a central pillar of the region's digital lifestyle infrastructure. It is operated by Macau Pass, a company that has expanded its reach from local transit and retail payments into a comprehensive super app covering dining, mobility, retail, and finance. MPay’s strategy has increasingly focused on cross-border interoperability, connecting Macao’s consumers with global services across dozens of international markets.

Ant International, the developer of the Agentic Mobile Protocol, is a major global fintech entity that provides digital payment and financial services solutions. The company has been at the forefront of establishing international standards for digital wallets and cross-border commerce. By open-sourcing protocols like AMP, Ant International is positioning itself as a foundational layer for the next generation of "agentic commerce." The company’s influence in the market is significant, particularly in the Asian fintech corridor, where it facilitates connectivity between diverse e-wallet ecosystems and millions of merchants. The partnership with MPay represents a strategic move to pilot these AI-driven payment standards in a high-traffic, tourism-centric market like Macao.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely followed Ant International’s efforts to standardize the burgeoning AI commerce sector. We recently reported on how Ant International Open-Sources Agentic Mobile Protocol to Power Global AI Agent Payments, a move designed to create a unified framework for digital banks and super apps. This followed a major industry collaboration where Ant International, Mastercard, and Visa Unite to Launch KYA Framework for AI Commerce, establishing the security protocols MPay is now implementing. Additionally, we have covered the broader trend of wallet interoperability, such as when TerraPay and Alipay+ Launch Cross-Border QR Payments for 3.7 Billion Wallets and Mastercard Launches Wallet Pay to Bridge Global Digital Wallet Ecosystems.

What this means

The shift from "search and pay" to "agentic delegation" places immense pressure on traditional payment gateways that rely on manual user authentication. If AI agents become the primary interface for commerce, the industry must solve the "Know Your Agent" challenge or risk a surge in unauthorized automated transactions. This announcement suggests that the "super app" model is no longer just about aggregating services, but about providing the intelligence to navigate them. For the broader sector, the question is whether proprietary protocols like AMP will become the de facto global standard, or if a fragmented landscape of AI payment protocols will emerge, complicating cross-border interoperability.
