Mollie Launches Renewed Pay by Bank Solution Powered by GoCardless Technology
By Lauren Towner · 6 October 2026

Mollie has launched a renewed Pay by Bank solution powered by GoCardless technology, marking the first major product integration since acquiring the firm earlier this year. For fintech professionals, this represents a significant consolidation of open banking and merchant services, streamlining the checkout process to three steps while bridging one-off and recurring payment rails.
What was announced
The new Pay by Bank offering is built on GoCardless’s open banking technology, which provides direct connectivity to more than 2,500 banks across Europe. By integrating this infrastructure directly into Mollie’s checkout experience, the solution reduces the typical open banking payment flow from five steps to three. This reduction is specifically designed to minimize customer drop-off and increase conversion rates for businesses by creating a more efficient user journey.
The product is designed to be versatile, supporting one-off transactions, recurring payments, and invoicing from a single technical foundation. A key feature of the system is the secure capture of a customer’s IBAN at the point of payment. This allows the merchant to establish a direct route to recurring revenue through Direct Debit, moving beyond the limitations of simple one-time transfers. Additionally, the service offers guaranteed payments, instant confirmation, and a transparent pricing structure.
Initially, Pay by Bank is available to businesses and consumers in the Netherlands, leveraging direct connections to the banks Dutch consumers already use. Mollie has stated that expansion to the rest of Europe is planned throughout 2027. Alongside the payment product, Mollie is introducing a public Issuing Bank Performance Page. This tool provides transparency regarding the reliability of various banks within open banking connections, ensuring that every link in the payment chain is visible to the businesses relying on it.
"Bringing GoCardless and Mollie together was never about adding a logo to our portfolio. It was about building the foundation for exactly this kind of product. Mollie Pay by Bank is the first proof of that vision, and it won't be the last."
Koen Köppen, Chief Executive Officer at Mollie.
The companies involved
Mollie is a prominent European payment service provider that has focused on simplifying financial services and infrastructure for businesses. Earlier this year, the company significantly expanded its technological capabilities by acquiring GoCardless, which now operates under the Mollie parent company. GoCardless has established itself as a specialist in bank-to-bank payments, initially gaining market share through its global direct debit network before pivoting toward open banking solutions.
Before its acquisition, GoCardless built a reputation for handling recurring payments at scale for thousands of merchants globally. The company reached a major milestone in late 2025 by achieving profitability, signaling the maturity of its business model. By combining GoCardless’s pan-European bank connectivity with Mollie’s merchant-facing checkout technology, the group aims to provide a more cohesive infrastructure for European payments. This integration allows Mollie to own the connection to banks directly, rather than relying on third-party aggregators, which is a strategic move to control the end-to-end user experience and improve reliability for merchants in the Netherlands and beyond.
What FF News has reported before
FF News has closely followed the evolution of GoCardless as it integrated into the Mollie ecosystem and expanded its technological footprint. In late 2025, we reported that GoCardless Achieves Profitability, a key moment for the firm prior to its acquisition. Around the same time, the company signaled its continued focus on the continent when GoCardless Promotes Two EMEA Leaders As It Affirms Its Commitment to Europe.
More recently, the firm has pushed into advanced automation and specialized sectors. We covered how Strategic Imperatives and GoCardless Launch Automated End-to-End Billing for Telecoms, and in late 2026, GoCardless Debuts UK’s First Agentic AI Payments with Trussell Charity Partnership, demonstrating the breadth of the technology now under Mollie's control.
What this means
This launch signals a shift in the open banking landscape from experimental "add-ons" to core infrastructure. By reducing the payment flow to three steps, Mollie is directly challenging the friction that has historically hampered open banking adoption compared to card payments or established local schemes like iDEAL. The decision to publish bank performance data puts significant pressure on traditional financial institutions to maintain high-quality API uptime, as their reliability is now a public metric. For the wider industry, this move highlights that the real value of open banking lies in the hybrid model—combining the speed of immediate authorization with the long-term stability of recurring direct debits.
