bunq has introduced a credit limit of up to €5,000 for its free credit card, marking a significant shift for the European neobank as it targets users requiring financial flexibility for travel and large purchases. This move, coupled with surpassing €10 billion in deposits, signals a maturing product suite designed to compete directly with traditional banking incumbents.

What was announced

The new credit limit is designed for bunq’s globally-accepted Credit Card, which previously operated without a traditional credit line. The feature is specifically aimed at facilitating payments that typically require credit, such as car rentals and hotel bookings, where users may not wish to pay immediately out of pocket. The card carries no monthly fees, and users can manage their spending, available credit, and upcoming repayments directly through the bunq app. All spending is designed with transparency in mind, requiring full monthly repayments to help users avoid long-term debt.

The card also integrates bunq’s existing security features, including rotating CVC codes and location-based card protection to prevent unauthorized use. Currently, the credit limit is available via an early access waitlist for 1,000 users per market in the Netherlands, Germany, and Spain, with plans to expand to more European markets in the near future.

The announcement was made during bunq Update 32 at the DeLarMar theater in Amsterdam, where the neobank also confirmed it has surpassed €10 billion in user deposits. To mark this milestone, the bank introduced a ‘Double Your Deposit’ campaign, which doubles one user's daily savings deposit every day. Furthermore, bunq announced the completed rollout of Wero across the Netherlands, Germany, France, and Belgium. This makes bunq the first bank to offer both eCommerce and person-to-person (P2P) payments across all four markets through the European Payments Initiative (EPI) system. Users can now send money cross-border or select Wero at checkout on participating merchant sites without providing card details.

"We're here to make users' lives easy. Offering up to €5,000 credit is a major step in providing all the financial tools users need, all in one place. It’s designed the bunq way: simple, transparent, and with full control. Whether you’re renting a car for a weekend trip or managing your monthly budget, our credit card gives you the financial freedom you need, without hidden fees."

The companies involved

bunq is currently the second-largest neobank in Europe. Headquartered in the Netherlands, bunq B.V. operates as a fully licensed bank under the supervision of De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) and the Autoriteit Financiële Markten (AFM). Since its inception, the challenger bank has focused on an international user base, positioning itself as a "bank of the free" for digital nomads and frequent travelers. It has consistently differentiated itself through a subscription-based model and a focus on user-centric features like multi-currency accounts and automated savings tools.

Wero is a cross-border payment system developed by the European Payments Initiative (EPI), a consortium of major European banks. It is designed to create a unified digital payment solution for Europe, reducing reliance on international card schemes like Visa and Mastercard. By integrating Wero, bunq joins a network of financial institutions aiming to streamline instant P2P and retail payments across the continent. The system is currently gaining traction in major markets including France, Germany, and Belgium, as it seeks to become a standard for European digital transactions.

What this means

The introduction of a €5,000 credit limit is a calculated move to bridge the gap between neobanking and traditional credit services. By addressing the "travel friction" often associated with debit-only neobanks—specifically car rentals and hotel deposits—bunq is removing a primary reason users maintain legacy bank accounts. The €10 billion deposit milestone suggests that trust in challenger banks is no longer a hurdle, putting significant pressure on traditional retail banks to justify their fees. However, the success of this credit product will depend on bunq's ability to manage risk without sacrificing the "simple" user experience that defines its brand. The industry should watch whether this prompts other neobanks to accelerate their own credit offerings.
