Press Release: Amboss and Aureo Launch Instant Lightning-to-Peso Payments for Mexican Businesses | Featured Image by FF News

Amboss Technologies and Aureo have integrated the Lightning Network with Mexico’s SPEI banking system, enabling instant cross-border payments that settle directly as pesos. This move addresses the friction in the $872 billion US-Mexico trade corridor, offering fintech professionals a high-speed, low-cost alternative to traditional correspondent banking and credit card rails.

What was announced

The integration connects the global Lightning Network directly to Mexico’s banking system, allowing for end-to-end instant settlement. Through this partnership, businesses using Amboss Payments can send funds to an Aureo Lightning address, which are then automatically converted and deposited as Mexican pesos into a bank account via the SPEI interbank transfer system. This process occurs in seconds, enabling recipients to receive fiat currency without the need to interact with a cryptocurrency exchange directly.

The service is positioned to serve the massive trade relationship between the United States and Mexico, which is estimated to reach $872 billion in goods for 2025. Currently, most of these cross-border business payments rely on correspondent banking rails that are often slow and costly. Lightning payments offer a lower-cost alternative to traditional card processing and provide instant, final settlement with no risk of chargebacks.

The integration leverages the Lightning Network’s global reach of over 900 million users, accessible through major platforms such as Coinbase, Binance, and Cash App. Mexican businesses can now accept these payments, hold balances in Bitcoin, USDT, or USDC for treasury management, and move funds to their local bank accounts at any time. The integration is live today and accessible through the Amboss Payments app, where users can link their accounts to any Aureo Lightning address.

"By connecting to Amboss, we make it possible for any business in Mexico to accept instant payments from customers anywhere and receive pesos directly in its bank account, fully compliant with Mexican regulations. Through Aureo’s Direct to Bank feature, a business only needs to set up an Aureo Lightning address once and link it to its Mexican bank account. From that point on, incoming Lightning payments are automatically converted and deposited as pesos, removing the complexity of creating and paying individual Lightning invoices. This is the missing link between the global economy and the Mexican banking system."

The companies involved

Amboss Technologies is a global payments platform designed to facilitate instant settlement for businesses through the Lightning Network. The company, led by CEO and Co-Founder Jesse Shrader, provides infrastructure that allows enterprises to route funds across borders without the delays associated with traditional banking. Amboss focuses on commercial-grade tools for digital asset management, including the ability for users to direct payments through various destinations and integrations within its proprietary application.

Aureo is a Mexican fintech platform that specializes in bridging the gap between digital asset networks and the domestic financial system. Under the leadership of CEO and Founder Gustavo Flores, Aureo enables the direct conversion of Lightning payments into Mexican peso bank deposits. The company’s primary offering is the "Direct to Bank" feature, which utilizes Mexico’s SPEI interbank transfer system to ensure funds arrive in local accounts within seconds. Aureo maintains a focus on regulatory adherence, operating in full compliance with Mexican financial requirements. This includes mandatory KYC (Know Your Customer) verification for all users on the platform to secure the link between the global economy and Mexico's regulated banking sector.

What this means

This announcement moves the needle for the Lightning Network by transitioning it from a retail-focused payment method to a viable B2B settlement layer for one of the world's largest trade corridors. By bypassing the traditional correspondent banking system, Amboss and Aureo are placing significant pressure on legacy remittance providers and commercial banks that rely on transaction fees and multi-day settlement periods. The elimination of chargeback risk is a strong incentive for merchants currently burdened by the costs of credit card fraud. However, the industry must now consider whether the speed of the SPEI integration sufficiently mitigates digital asset volatility to encourage large-scale corporate adoption in Mexico.
