Press Release: Sola and PAX Technology Partner to Launch Cloud-Driven Android Terminal Solution | Featured Image by FF News

Sola and PAX Technology have entered a strategic partnership to standardize Sola’s in-person payment acceptance on PAX hardware. The launch of Sola Terminal brings cloud-driven, card-present capabilities to PAX Android devices, allowing software partners to integrate physical payments via a single REST API without the need for local drivers or complex SDK management.

What was announced

Sola has designated PAX Technology as its preferred terminal platform, marking a consolidation of its terminal fleet. Central to this partnership is the launch of Sola Terminal, a certified application designed specifically for PAX’s Android-based hardware. The solution leverages Sola’s cloud-driven architecture, enabling software partners to connect their platforms to in-person payment terminals through a single REST API. This approach eliminates the traditional requirement for local drivers, software development kits (SDKs), or direct physical connections between the merchant's software and the payment device. Once a terminal is connected to the internet, the partner's software communicates with Sola, which in turn drives the terminal.

The application is scheduled for launch in October, featuring immediate support for surcharging, PIN debit, and Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) payments. Sola has indicated that support for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (eWIC) is expected to follow. This focus on EBT and eWIC signals a specific push into the grocery and convenience store sectors, segments where PAX already maintains a significant presence. For merchants, the transition offers an upgrade path from aging PCI 5 equipment to newer devices built to PCI 6 or PCI 7 security standards. The companies intend to showcase the technology with live demonstrations at PAXCON 2026 in Anaheim on October 27–28, while Sola leadership will also attend Money20/20 USA in Las Vegas to discuss the integration.

"Software partners should be able to bring in-person payments to market without taking on the complexity of managing terminal deployments,"

The companies involved

Sola is a modern payments platform designed to serve both businesses and software partners by streamlining the integration of payment processing across various channels. The company focuses on providing a unified experience for online, mobile, and unattended payments, now extending its reach further into the card-present space through its cloud-based terminal technology. By simplifying the technical requirements for in-person transactions, Sola aims to reduce the friction typically associated with hardware deployments for software-led businesses.

PAX Technology is a prominent global provider of electronic payment solutions, specializing in the development and manufacture of point-of-sale (POS) terminals. The company is a subsidiary of PAX Global Technology Limited and has established itself as a leader in the transition toward Android-based payment hardware. By providing a secure and flexible terminal platform, PAX enables software developers to deploy sophisticated applications directly onto payment devices. The company’s hardware is widely utilized across the retail and hospitality sectors, and its PAXCON event serves as a central hub for its ecosystem of partners. This partnership with Sola reinforces PAX's position as a foundational hardware provider for fintech firms looking to modernize the merchant counter experience with cloud-integrated solutions.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has previously covered Sola’s expansion into the European market, notably when Salt Edge and Sola Partner To Power Instant Payments Across Europe to facilitate instant payment capabilities. PAX Technology has also been a frequent subject of reporting as it expands its footprint through various software integrations. In September 2026, it was reported that Finix Expands Unified Commerce Suite with New PAX Android Payment Terminals, further validating the industry trend toward Android-based POS systems. Additionally, PAX’s role in specialized sectors was highlighted when Bluefin and PAX Technology Secure Patient Payments for Epic Wisdom Dental Environments, demonstrating the hardware's versatility in healthcare settings. These prior reports underscore a consistent move toward unified commerce and the modernization of legacy payment infrastructure through strategic hardware-software alliances.

What this means

This partnership highlights a significant shift in the card-present market: the decoupling of payment logic from the physical device. By moving terminal management to the cloud, Sola is directly challenging the traditional "thick client" model that has long dominated the industry. This puts immense pressure on legacy hardware providers who still rely on cumbersome, device-specific SDKs and local drivers. As software-led payments become the standard, the ability to deploy and update terminal fleets remotely via API will likely become a baseline requirement rather than a premium feature. The industry must now consider how quickly merchants will abandon aging PCI 5 hardware in favor of these more flexible, Android-based ecosystems that offer a bridge between physical and digital commerce.
