Sionic Appoints Shashi Varma and Joe Ciranni to Scale Real-Time Payments Growth
By Lauren Towner · 10 September 2026

Sionic has appointed Shashi Varma as CTO and Head of Product and Joe Ciranni as EVP of Client Services. For fintech professionals, these hires signal a maturation of the real-time payments sector as U.S.-based Account-to-Account (A2A) providers move from technical proof-of-concept to large-scale enterprise deployment and intensive client management.
What was announced
Sionic has filled two critical senior leadership roles to manage the scaling of its Instant Bank Pay and Fraud Detection Service (FDS) platforms. Shashi Varma joins as CTO and Head of Product, bringing over two decades of experience from Shift4, where he served as Vice President of Enterprise Architecture. Varma’s remit includes overseeing the technical engineering of Sionic’s instant payment rails, AI-powered fraud detection, and agentic commerce initiatives. His background includes building automated underwriting platforms and leading hybrid cloud migrations, as well as founding Velocity Solutions.
Joe Ciranni has been appointed as EVP of Client Services, a role focused on ensuring financial institutions and merchants derive value from Sionic’s suite of services. Ciranni brings 30 years of experience in enterprise sales and operational leadership, including a 20-year tenure at Hewlett Packard and executive roles at ServiceNow, NICE Ltd, and Verint. Most recently, he served as VP of Customer Experience at Talitrix.
The appointments come as Sionic expands its footprint in the U.S. real-time payment market. The company’s Instant Bank Pay service utilizes existing real-time bank payment rails to facilitate cash payments for mobile, online, and in-store transactions. By moving funds bank-to-bank, the platform allows merchants to bypass traditional card swipe fees while receiving deposits within seconds. The company also utilizes an AI-based Fraud Detection Service (FDS) to protect these real-time, A2A transactions at the point of sale.
"Shashi and Joe have a rare combination of deep industry expertise, technical leadership, and a proven track record of driving growth at scale," said Sionic CEO and founder Ronald Herman. "Their leadership strengthens our capabilities, accelerates our roadmap, and positions Sionic to capitalize on the significant opportunities ahead.”

The companies involved
Based in Atlanta, Sionic (formerly known in some contexts as Sionic Mobile) operates at the intersection of real-time payments and point-of-sale technology. The company has carved out a specific niche by providing the first AI-based Fraud Detection Service (FDS) specifically designed to protect real-time, Account-to-Account (A2A) payments at the point of sale. This is a critical infrastructure piece for the U.S. market, where real-time rails are increasingly being leveraged for commercial transactions rather than just peer-to-peer transfers.
Sionic’s business model targets three primary stakeholders: financial institutions, who provide the payment rails; merchants, who benefit from lower transaction costs and immediate settlement; and consumers, who can use Apple or Google wallets to pay directly from their bank accounts. To incentivize consumer adoption—a traditional hurdle for A2A payments—the platform supports merchant-provided "Perks." Under the leadership of founder and CEO Ronald Herman, the company has focused on integrating these real-time capabilities into existing retail environments, positioning itself as a bridge between legacy banking systems and modern digital wallet experiences.
What FF News has reported before
FF News has closely followed Sionic’s technical evolution and its strategic partnerships with major cloud providers. In August 2026, the publication reported that Sionic Debuts Instant Bank Pay and AI Fraud Detection on Microsoft Marketplace, a move that significantly expanded the accessibility of its tools for enterprise clients. This followed a partnership with Agentix to launch Agentic AI Commerce for Instant Bank Payments.
Earlier coverage highlighted the company's focus on security, specifically when Sionic Announces Fraud Protection Service Using Google Cloud AI Technology in 2024. The relationship with Google was established even earlier, as seen in the 2023 report on how Sionic and Google Cloud Expand Partnership to Enhance Verified Rapid Payments℠ Platform with Google Generative AI.
What this means
The appointment of high-level executives from established giants like Shift4 and ServiceNow suggests that the real-time payment industry is entering a phase of institutional scaling. The primary challenge for A2A payments in the U.S. remains the "trust gap" and the lack of consumer protections compared to traditional credit cards. By doubling down on AI-powered fraud detection and client success, Sionic is addressing the two biggest friction points for merchant adoption: security and operational support. As card networks face increasing scrutiny over swipe fees, the market is ripe for A2A alternatives, but only if they can match the reliability and ease of use that merchants expect from legacy systems.
