ModernRails Appoints Raghu Sastry as CTO to Scale Global Payments Infrastructure
By Lauren Towner · 16 October 2026

ModernRails has appointed Raghu Sastry as Chief Technology Officer to lead its technical strategy and platform architecture. For fintech professionals, this move signals an acceleration in the development of unified, real-time payment infrastructures that combine messaging, clearing, and settlement, aiming to replace fragmented legacy systems with a single, ISO 20022-native orchestration layer.
What was announced
ModernRails has brought on Raghu Sastry to serve as Chief Technology Officer, a role that tasks him with leading the company’s technology strategy, platform architecture, and product innovation. Sastry’s mandate focuses on scaling orchestration capabilities across both domestic and cross-border payment rails, specifically targeting the integration of messaging and clearing into a unified execution layer. He arrives with over two decades of technical leadership experience spanning semiconductors, enterprise infrastructure, mobile platforms, and financial technology.
Sastry will specifically focus on advancing the company’s ISO 20022-native architecture. This technical direction is intended to enable rich data interoperability and drive real-time orchestration across global rails, including domestic real-time networks and cross-border settlement frameworks. The objective is to eliminate the fragmentation typically found in traditional financial flows, enabling deterministic and auditable transactions.
Before joining ModernRails, Sastry worked with FinTech Automation to build its infrastructure platform. His career includes senior engineering and leadership roles at Agilent Technologies, PMC-Sierra, Junowallet, and Zeuss Technologies, where he led the development of production-grade systems across hardware and software stacks. His technical background is notably broad, covering VLSI design, distributed systems, server and storage architecture, and payments infrastructure for regulated institutions. He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of South Florida and is named on nine U.S. patents.
The companies involved
ModernRails functions as a payment orchestration hub designed to connect financial institutions to a variety of domestic and international payment rails. The company distinguishes itself by operating as a third-party service provider to the Federal Reserve, positioning its technology as a critical infrastructure layer for the modern financial system. Rather than operating as a standard payments application, the firm focuses on the "control layer" of global money movement.
The platform is built to support real-time and near real-time processing, incorporating integrated compliance controls and FX enablement. A significant aspect of its market position is its focus on interoperability, including the ability to handle stablecoin transactions alongside traditional fiat rails. By building on an ISO 20022-native architecture, ModernRails aligns with the global shift toward more data-rich messaging protocols. This approach is designed to provide financial institutions with a more cohesive execution layer, moving away from the asynchronous processes that have historically defined cross-border and domestic settlements.
What this means
The appointment of a CTO with a background in VLSI design and hardware stacks suggests that the next frontier for payment orchestration is not just software-deep, but performance-driven at the engineering level. As the industry moves toward ISO 20022 as a global standard, the pressure is mounting on legacy providers who still rely on asynchronous, fragmented processes. The real challenge for the sector is no longer just moving money, but managing the "control layer" that handles the data and compliance requirements of that movement in real-time. This move highlights a growing trend where infrastructure performance and data interoperability are becoming the primary differentiators in the crowded orchestration market, potentially leaving behind firms that cannot offer deterministic, real-time settlement.
