IDEMIA Secure Transactions has launched an Agentic Commerce solution to enable payment networks to facilitate transactions initiated by AI agents. This development is critical for fintech professionals as it provides the infrastructure necessary for domestic and regional schemes to maintain payment sovereignty and trust as automated AI assistants begin to replace traditional consumer-facing checkout interfaces.

What was announced

The new Agentic Commerce solution is designed to allow payment networks, regional schemes, and private-label card issuers to integrate their services into the emerging AI-driven shopping ecosystem. As AI agents move from simple product recommendations to actively initiating purchases, IDEMIA Secure Transactions (IST) provides the framework to ensure these transactions remain secure, selectable, and verifiable. The solution is built upon IST’s existing Token Platform and incorporates FIDO2-certified authentication to manage the industry shift toward less visible, automated checkouts.

The solution addresses the changing payment journey by answering three critical questions for networks: who expressed the intent to buy, who confirmed the purchase, and how the transaction can be proven months later during a dispute. To achieve this, the platform offers four primary capabilities:

  • Agent-ready tokenization: This releases payment credentials through the IST Token Platform only after consent is verified, ensuring issuers remain in the decision path.
  • Passkey-based authentication: This utilizes secure cardholder authentication during both the initial enrolment and the payment phase.
  • Restricted-use payments: Tokens can be limited by specific parameters such as merchant, transaction amount, category, or time period, allowing AI agents to operate only within defined boundaries.
  • Verifiable proof of consent: This creates a record of authorization that can be produced for dispute resolution even if the AI agent that initiated the transaction no longer exists.

By providing this independent trust infrastructure, IST aims to allow every payment network to compete on a level playing field with international payment schemes that have built agentic commerce within their own proprietary environments.

"At IDEMIA Secure Transactions, we believe it's crucial to give every payment network a proven way to be ready for AI-driven checkout. Domestic and regional schemes, private-label and co-branded card issuers can now take part in this new era of commerce on their own terms, with trust and control for the consumers,"

The companies involved

IDEMIA Secure Transactions (IST) is a global provider of payment and connectivity solutions, specializing in security-first infrastructure for the financial services sector. The company serves a diverse range of clients, including payment networks, digital wallets, and card issuers worldwide. IST has established itself as a significant player in the payment tokenization market, leveraging its heritage in physical and digital security to bridge the gap between traditional banking and modern digital commerce.

The company operates as a key technology partner for domestic and regional payment schemes, providing them with the tools necessary to compete against international payment giants. By focusing on sovereign payment solutions, IST enables local financial ecosystems to maintain control over their transaction data and authentication processes. This focus on "trust infrastructure" is a core part of their market positioning, particularly as the industry shifts toward more complex, automated transaction models. The firm’s expertise spans from secure hardware to cloud-based tokenization platforms, making it a central figure in the technical architecture of modern global payments.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has previously tracked IDEMIA Secure Transactions’ efforts to modernize regional payment systems through mobile-first solutions. In late 2026, the publication covered how Monizze and IDEMIA Launch Monizze Pay for Contactless Voucher Payments in Belgium. That initiative focused on bringing sovereign mobile payments to employee benefits, allowing users to make contactless payments via a dedicated app rather than relying on physical cards. This prior collaboration highlighted IST’s strategy of providing the underlying technology for specialized payment providers to launch their own branded, secure digital wallets, a precursor to the broader infrastructure-level support now being offered through the Agentic Commerce solution.

What this means

The shift toward agentic commerce represents a fundamental change in the payment hierarchy, moving the point of influence from the consumer to the algorithm. This announcement signals that the industry is moving to prevent a "black box" scenario where global tech giants or major international schemes monopolize AI-driven transactions. By offering a standardized trust layer, IST is putting pressure on the major card schemes to maintain open standards rather than locking issuers into proprietary AI ecosystems. The critical question for the sector remains how dispute resolution frameworks will adapt to "ghost" agents—AI entities that may be deleted or updated between the time of purchase and a chargeback request. This move forces the industry to treat AI agents as distinct, authenticated entities rather than simple extensions of the cardholder.
