Press Release: Flutterwave Partners with Techdollar to Launch Africa's First Equity-Backed Liquidity Benefit | Featured Image by FF News

Flutterwave has partnered with private credit platform Techdollar to launch an equity-backed liquidity program for its global workforce. By utilizing banking infrastructure from Nuvion, the initiative allows employees to access capital against their private shares without selling them, addressing the increasing challenge of "paper wealth" in high-valuation fintech companies that remain private.

What was announced

The partnership introduces a financial benefit that allows Flutterwave employees to secure loans using their equity holdings as collateral. This arrangement marks the first company-wide rollout for Techdollar, a platform that has traditionally provided liquidity solutions to a narrower group of founders, senior executives, and major shareholders. By expanding this access to the broader workforce, the program aims to provide financial flexibility to those who have contributed to the company's growth but would otherwise have to wait for an IPO or a formal secondary sale to realize the value of their shares.

The operational side of the partnership relies on Nuvion’s banking infrastructure. Employees participating in the program will open accounts with Nuvion to receive the proceeds from Techdollar’s equity-backed loans. This setup creates a direct pipeline between the lending platform and a functional bank account, ensuring that borrowers can access and utilize their funds seamlessly. The move comes as technology companies globally stay private for longer periods, often leaving employees with significant equity compensation that remains illiquid for years.

Flutterwave, which operates across 34 African countries, reached a valuation of $3.3 billion following a Series E funding round in June 2026. To date, the company has raised more than $500 million. This new liquidity program is designed to let staff retain their stake in the company’s future upside while meeting immediate financial needs.

"I always say that our people are our secret sauce and the driving force behind our success at Flutterwave, and we believe they should share in the value they create without having to wait for a major liquidity event. Success is about how far your vision can carry you, and we want our employees to have the financial flexibility to dream bigger today. That is why we are thrilled to partner with Techdollar and Nuvion. By opening an account with Nuvion, our team can seamlessly receive their equity-backed proceeds, unlocking the wealth they’ve worked so hard to build while retaining their stake in our shared future,"

The companies involved

Founded in 2016, Flutterwave has established itself as a dominant force in African payments infrastructure. The company provides a suite of digital asset and payment offerings, facilitating transactions across dozens of markets on the continent. Its cap table includes high-profile strategic investors, most notably Ripple, which participated in the company's $3.3 billion Series E round. Flutterwave has previously collaborated with Nuvion to develop stablecoin-based payment infrastructure, making this employee benefit program an extension of an existing technical relationship.

Techdollar is a private credit platform specifically designed to bridge the gap between private equity ownership and liquid capital. By providing loans against private-company shares, the firm enables early investors and employees to access wealth without triggering the tax or ownership implications of a direct sale. Nuvion provides the underlying banking rails that connect these alternative credit solutions to the traditional financial system. Together, these entities are targeting the growing segment of "unicorn" employees who hold significant assets on paper but lack traditional borrowing options.

What this means

This announcement moves the needle for the African tech ecosystem by setting a new standard for employee retention and compensation. As the "IPO window" remains unpredictable, the pressure on unicorns to provide internal liquidity is mounting. By institutionalizing equity-backed lending, Flutterwave is effectively de-risking the career choice of joining a high-growth startup for top-tier talent. However, this model raises questions for the wider sector regarding the valuation of private shares used as collateral. If market conditions shift, the delta between a company's last funding round and its actual secondary market value could create friction for private credit providers. For now, it signals a shift where private equity is becoming a more versatile financial tool for the workforce, not just the board.
